Do we like Tetsuo Shima?
A character from Akira (1982-1990 (manga), 1)
Our score: 2 out of 10. We feel for him, but we wouldn't back him. He's a hurt kid, and his rage hurts far more people than his bullies ever did.
Tetsuo is a member of Kaneda's bike gang in a crumbling, dystopian Neo-Tokyo. He is the smaller, weaker one, always rescued by Kaneda and resenting it. After a motorcycle crash involving an escaped government test subject, the military takes him in.
His new psychic abilities grow quickly, and he has no way to handle the power or the years of insecurity behind it. He sets out to find Akira, hoping to learn how far his power can go. Along the way he is both a victim and a menace.
He scores low because of what he does: he hurts people who tried to help him and treats the city as his playground. The story makes him tragic and understandable, which is why he's memorable, but sympathy isn't the same as backing him.
