Do we like Tanya von Degurechaff?

A character from Saga of Tanya the Evil (2017)

Our score: 3 out of 10. Brilliant, loyal to her own survival and ice-cold about everyone else. You'd admire her on your side, but you wouldn't want to work for her.

Tanya Degurechaff looks like an innocent little blonde girl. Inside she is a cynical Japanese corporate man who was reborn into a fantasy world locked in a war that resembles World War I. The man had a run-in with a mysterious being called Being X, who claims to be God. Tanya's rebirth is the result, and she has been defying X ever since. She joins the Empire's army as an aerial mage and tries to rise through the ranks, hoping for a safe desk job far from the front.

Tanya thinks like a ruthless bureaucrat. She values efficiency, logic and her own career, and she has little patience for anything emotional. Her skill and cold pragmatism make her a feared commander, nicknamed the Devil of the Rhine. Her soldiers fear her and also depend on her. Some of them wrongly believe she cares about them deeply.

Why a 3? She is funny, clever and hard not to watch, and she is more of a desperate survivor than a gleeful villain. But she is cruel in training, she uses people without hesitation, and she is responsible for a huge amount of death. We enjoy her more than we'd actually back her.
