Do we like Syndrome?
A character from The Incredibles (2004)
Our score: 2 out of 10. A brilliant inventor who chose revenge over decency. His wounded-fan backstory is sympathetic, but his actions are far too dangerous for us to back him.
Buddy Pine was a child who idolized the superhero Mr. Incredible and begged to be his sidekick, "IncrediBoy". He was turned away, and the rejection stuck with him. By the time The Incredibles takes place, supers have been pushed into hiding, and Buddy has become Syndrome, a cheerful, showy, gadget-obsessed villain.
His appeal is that he is a fan who never got over being dismissed. He has real genius, a flair for theatrics, and a talkative, petty streak. His plan is built around proving he is better than the heroes he once worshipped.
We score him low because the sympathy runs out quickly. A slight from childhood does not excuse the danger he puts families and strangers in, and his idea of "making everyone super" is really about making his own gadgets the only thing that matters. He is fun to watch, but we would not back him.
