Do we like Superman (Clark Kent)?
A character from Action Comics #1 (1938)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes. He has near-limitless power and uses it to protect people, not to rule them. He's a bit of a boy scout, but he's the hero we'd back first.
Superman is the last survivor of the doomed planet Krypton. His rocket ship landed near Smallville, Kansas, where farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent found him and raised him as Clark Kent. As an adult he moves to Metropolis and works as a mild-mannered reporter at the Daily Planet. In secret he uses his powers to protect the world as Superman.
He has super strength, flight, speed and invulnerability, which make him godlike next to the people around him. His story is not about conquest, though. The hero is meant to show the goodness of the human spirit and everyone's capacity to do right. As Clark he plays up the awkward, easygoing side, and the people he loves, like Lois Lane, see him differently from how the world sees the cape.
That's why he scores so high. He is kind, humble and principled, and he sees the best in people, including some who haven't earned it. He loses a point because he can be preachy and predictable, and because his secret identity means he lies to his friends. Even so, he is the gold standard that other heroes are measured against, and we would follow him anywhere.
