Do we like Subaru Natsuki?

A character from Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World (2014–present)

Our score: 7 out of 10. He's a mess, but he keeps getting back up for the people he loves. We'd back him, and we'd also tell him to slow down and ask for help.

Subaru is an ordinary, rather aimless teenager who is suddenly summoned to a fantasy world with no powers, no skills and no idea what is happening. Early on he meets a silver-haired half-elf girl, and he decides to help her. The series follows him as he tries to find his place in a dangerous kingdom.

His one special ability is "Return by Death". When he dies, he returns to an earlier save point and keeps his memories, but nobody else does. It's a powerful tool, but he alone has to carry the pain and trauma of every attempt. That's the core of the show: he has to solve problems by suffering through them.

We score him 7 because he's easy to root for and hard to admire at the start. He's cocky, loud, insecure and often wrong, and he makes things worse in the early going. But he has real heart and a stubborn refusal to quit. He also learns and grows, slowly and painfully, and that growth is what earns him our backing.
