Do we like Steve?

A character from Minecraft (2011)

Our score: 7 out of 10. A cheerful, hard-working builder who mostly wants to make things and survive. He's a blank slate in the game and a loud, loyal guide in the film, so yes, we'd back him.

Steve is the face of Minecraft, the best-known default player avatar in gaming. In the game he has no fixed backstory, because he was designed as a customizable avatar for you to fill in. He wakes up in a world of blocks, punches trees for wood, builds a shelter before dark, and survives zombies, skeletons and exploding creepers.

In A Minecraft Movie (2025), Steve gets a personality of his own. Jack Black plays him as an energetic, nostalgic craftsman who helps a band of misfits through the Overworld so they can get home. Mojang's own executives described this as Jack Black's version of Steve, not anyone's default one.

He scores well because he is a creator more than a fighter. He is optimistic, resourceful and loyal, and the damage he does is the ordinary cost of surviving in a block world. He loses a few points because as a game avatar he is a blank slate, and as a movie character he is fairly goofy and impulsive.
