Do we like Squidward Tentacles?
A character from SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–present)
Our score: 6 out of 10. He's grumpy, snobby and lazy, but he's also the relatable voice of reason. We'd back him, though we'd keep the volume down.
Squidward is a blue octopus who works the register at the Krusty Krab, the fast-food restaurant in the undersea town of Bikini Bottom. He hates the job, the customers and his cheerful fry-cook coworker SpongeBob. He wants to be a respected artist, clarinetist and painter, and he thinks he's much too cultured for his surroundings.
Most episodes follow a pattern. Squidward wants peace and quiet, and SpongeBob and Patrick, his neighbours, wreck it by accident. Squidward's attempts to get fame, relaxation or revenge then go wrong. His art and music are rarely as good as he thinks, which is a big part of the joke.
We gave him a 6 because he's a flawed everyman. He's selfish, snobbish and quick to complain. He also has a dry wit that audiences enjoy, and he's put up with a lot of nonsense. He's not a hero, but he's easy to sympathise with, and over time he's shown he cares about his odd neighbours.
