Do we like Snugglepot and Cuddlepie?
A character from Snugglepot and Cuddlepie: Their Adventures Wonderful (1918)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Brave, kind and endlessly loyal. We'd happily follow these two into the bush, though we'd keep a close eye out for Banksia Men.
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are gumnut babies, tiny bush folk created by Australian author May Gibbs. The book first appeared in 1918 and follows the pair as they leave their home among the gum trees. They befriend a girl named Blossom and head off in search of the great unknown, and in particular a human.
They are inquisitive, quick to make friends and always ready to help. Their adventures put them up against the Banksia Men, the sinister villains of the bush, and they meet many other creatures along the way. They meet each threat with pluck and teamwork, not with cruelty.
We score them 9 out of 10. They are warm, loyal and brave, and they do no real harm. Their main flaw is a habit of rushing into danger, which is hard to hold against such small heroes.
