Do we like Shaggy Rogers?

A character from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1969)

Our score: 8 out of 10. A loyal, kind-hearted coward who keeps showing up for his friends even when he's terrified. We'd back him, and we'd also share our sandwich.

Shaggy is the laid-back, ravenous, easily spooked member of Mystery Inc. He travels in the Mystery Machine van with Fred, Daphne, Velma and his Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. The gang investigates apparent ghosts and monsters, and these usually turn out to be people in disguise. Shaggy has been voiced by Casey Kasem and, since 2009, mostly by Matthew Lillard. Lillard also played him in the live-action films.

His defining trait is cowardice. He yelps 'Zoinks!', runs from every spooky figure, and agrees to face danger only when Scooby-Snacks are on offer. But he never really abandons his friends. He and Scooby are the bait, the comic relief and, more often than they'd admit, the reason the trap works.

That's why he scores well. He's no schemer or leader, and he's not much of a hero on paper. But he's warm, funny, loyal and honest about being scared, and he does the right thing anyway. He loses points only for being a reliably unreliable sidekick whose appetite sometimes outweighs his judgment.
