Do we like Seven of Nine?
A character from Star Trek: Voyager (1997–2001)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's blunt and she's brilliant, and she keeps choosing the crew over the cold logic she was built on. Expect a few awkward moments along the way.
Voyager is a Starfleet ship stranded far from home, and its crew spends years trying to get back. In the fourth season the crew gets a new member. Seven of Nine is a human who was assimilated by the Borg as a child. She is cut off from the Collective and brought aboard, and she has to work out who she is as an individual.
At first she is cold, literal and impatient with human messiness. She has Borg implants and knows an enormous amount about technology and about the Borg. Captain Janeway takes her on as a project and a crew member, and Seven slowly learns about emotions, friendship, art and independence. Her humour is dry and mostly unintentional. She also tries, awkwardly, to date.
We give her an 8. She makes real mistakes and can be arrogant, but the story is her struggle to become her own person, and she is loyal and capable throughout. She does a lot of good and little lasting harm.
