Do we like Sebastian Michaelis?

A character from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) (2006–present)

Our score: 6 out of 10. Impeccable, loyal and very entertaining, but he's a demon who's waiting to collect. We'd want him on our side, and we'd never sign anything he handed us.

Sebastian is the title character of Yana Toboso's Victorian-era dark fantasy Black Butler. He serves Ciel Phantomhive, a boy who is both the head of a noble family and the Queen's secret "watchdog" who investigates London's underworld. Ciel summoned him and made a Faustian contract. Sebastian will help him get revenge, and in return he'll take Ciel's soul. Until then he plays the perfect butler.

Sebastian's catchphrase is that he is "simply one hell of a butler", and it's a pun on the word for demon. He cooks, cleans, fights, tracks down villains and keeps a clumsy household staff in line, all with the same polite smile. He also has a soft spot for cats, which is the one thing that reliably breaks his composure.

We score him a 6 because the charm and competence are real, and so is the menace. He protects Ciel, but he's a predator who is patiently waiting for payment. He's wonderful to watch and he's a tempting ally. You'd still want to read the fine print before you backed him.
