Do we like Sanji?
A character from One Piece (1997–present)
Our score: 8 out of 10. We'd back him. He feeds anyone who's hungry, fights hard for his crew, and treats the people he cares about with fierce loyalty. His love-struck antics are the only thing that holds him back.
Sanji is introduced as a sous-chef at the Baratie, a floating sea restaurant in the East Blue, where he runs the dining room. He is a tall, sharply dressed cook with a curly eyebrow and a hot temper. He is quick to anger when someone insults his cooking or wastes food. He is also a fierce fighter who uses only his legs, so his hands stay safe for cooking.
Sanji's heart is his best feature. He knows what it's like to go hungry, so he won't turn away anyone who needs a meal, even a pirate who's an enemy. This is the moment captain Luffy decides he has found his cook. Sanji is also a hopeless flirt who swoons over almost any woman he meets. This is mostly a running gag, and it can be tiresome. But the same chivalry makes him someone you'd trust to stand between your friends and danger.
Over the course of the story he proves to be one of the crew's strongest fighters, as well as its most dependable cook. He has a complicated family past, and it pulls at him and tests his loyalty to the crew. He keeps choosing his friends and his own dream over where he came from. That's why he scores well. He's loud and prone to dramatic exits, but at heart he's decent, brave and loyal.
When his past catches up with him, he leaves the crew on his own at Zou to protect them from danger. It is a painful sacrifice that shows how much they matter to him. His arc ends with him cutting ties with his family and returning to the Straw Hats.
