Do we like San (Princess Mononoke)?
A character from Princess Mononoke (1997)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Fierce, loyal and honest. She's hard to like at first, but we'd follow her into the forest. Her anger comes from defending her home, not from cruelty.
San was abandoned as a baby and raised by the wolf goddess Moro. She thinks of herself as a wolf and hates humans. The film follows her fight to defend the ancient forest against Lady Eboshi's ironworks, which is eating away at it. The humans call her "Princess Mononoke", meaning vengeful spirit.
Her life crosses with Ashitaka, a cursed young prince who is trying to find peace between the forest and the humans. She distrusts him at first. Over time she sees a gentler side of humanity, and the film lets her keep her wildness while she does.
We score her an 8. She is prickly and often violent, but her anger is aimed at people who are actually destroying her home. She is also loyal, brave and honest, and she grows without losing who she is.
