Do we like Rue Bennett?
A character from Euphoria (2019–present)
Our score: 4 out of 10. We love her and root for her, but she lies, steals and hurts the people closest to her. We'd back her recovery, not her choices.
Rue Bennett is a 17-year-old who comes home from rehab at the start of Euphoria. She narrates the story of a group of teenagers in a suburban American town. She lost her father young and she is sharp, funny and deeply anxious. Her mum Leslie and younger sister Gia are the family she leans on and lets down.
Rue says she'll stay clean, but she isn't really trying, and she hides her use behind charm and excuses. Her life changes when she meets Jules, a new girl in town. Jules gives her a reason to want something better, and Rue's feelings for her drive much of her story.
We score her a 4 because her heart is mostly in the right place, but her actions repeatedly aren't. She lies, manipulates and drags others into her problems. She is also painfully human and easy to sympathise with. We want her to get better more than we trust her to.
