Do we like Rubeus Hagrid?
A character from Harry Potter (1997-2007)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes. He is warm, loyal and brave, and he's the first person to make Harry feel at home. His soft spot for dangerous creatures causes trouble, but his heart is always in the right place.
Hagrid is the big, gentle gamekeeper at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. When we first meet him, he is sent to find young Harry Potter and bring him into the wizarding world he never knew he belonged to. For many readers, he is the warm, welcoming face of the whole story.
He is a half-giant with a huge heart and a poor sense of danger. He loves creatures that others fear, from dragons to giant spiders, and he is a terrible secret-keeper. He is also wholly devoted to Dumbledore, who trusted him when others didn't. That mix of loyalty, kindness and recklessness is why he works so well as a mentor and friend.
He gets a high score because the good he does far outweighs the trouble he causes. His mistakes come from enthusiasm and trust, not malice. He is the sort of friend who turns up at the door with a cake and a monster, and we'd back him for it.
