Do we like Roy Mustang?
A character from Fullmetal Alchemist (2001-2010)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's vain and ambitious, but he's loyal to his people and wants to lead the country better than it's led now.
Roy Mustang is a colonel in the State Military of Amestris. He is known as the Flame Alchemist because he can snap his gloved fingers and set things on fire. He first appears as a sharp, flirty, slightly lazy officer who helps the young alchemists Edward and Alphonse Elric on their search to restore their bodies.
Under the charm, Mustang is driven. He is determined to rise through the ranks, and he has a firm sense of what leaders owe the people they command. He keeps a close, loyal team around him, led by his steady lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and he looks after them as much as they look after him.
He is vain, he skips paperwork, and he carries heavy guilt over what he did as a soldier in an earlier war. That guilt is why his ambition is about changing things, not just gaining power. He is flawed but principled, and he is easy to root for. We give him an 8.
