Do we like Rorschach?
A character from Watchmen (1986-1987)
Our score: 5 out of 10. He's loyal, incorruptible and brave, but also brutal and unbending. We'd back his honesty and nerve, but we wouldn't want him as a partner.
Rorschach is a masked vigilante in a version of 1985 where costumed heroes have been outlawed. He wears a white mask with black inkblots that keep changing shape. He keeps working alone, long after the other heroes have retired or been forced into the government's service. His journal narrates much of the story, and it shows a bleak, harsh view of the city and the people in it.
When a former colleague is killed, he becomes convinced that someone is targeting costumed heroes. He sets out to investigate and warns his old teammates. Rorschach sees the world in black and white. He is strict and sometimes cruel, but he is incorruptible, honest and tough.
We score him a 5 because he's two things at once. He's a brave and honest man who won't be bought or scared off. He's also violent and rigid, with a harsh view of right and wrong that leaves no room for mercy or compromise. We like his integrity and are wary of his methods.
