Do we like Roronoa Zoro?
A character from One Piece (1997–present)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's loyal, honourable and nearly unbeatable in a fight. He's also hopeless with directions and a bit too fond of a nap and a drink.
Zoro first appears as "Pirate Hunter" Zoro, a feared bounty hunter in the East Blue who is tied up and about to be executed by a cruel local Marine officer. Monkey D. Luffy, a cheerful young pirate hoping to find a crew, frees him. Zoro becomes the first member of the Straw Hat Pirates. One Piece follows the crew's voyage across a dangerous ocean as Luffy aims to become King of the Pirates.
Zoro's dream is to become the greatest swordsman in the world. He fights with the Three Sword Style, holding one blade in each hand and one in his teeth. Beyond the swordplay, he is stoic and blunt, drinks heavily and sleeps whenever he can. He is also famously unable to find his way anywhere, even on a ship. Under the gruff surface he is fiercely loyal, and he keeps his word even when it costs him dearly.
Why a 9? He's the crew's rock. He's the first to charge at a powerful enemy and the last to desert a friend, and his rivalry and trust with Luffy hold the crew together. He loses points for the bloodshed he's willing to cause and his awful sense of direction. The Netflix version has been praised for capturing his deadpan, grizzled side, though some critics wanted more of his comic goofiness.
