Do we like Rogue?

A character from X-Men (Marvel Comics) (1981–present)

Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She starts out on the wrong side, but she's brave, loyal and hard on herself, and she keeps choosing to do right.

Anna Marie grew up in Mississippi. She ran away from home young after her mutant power showed itself: she absorbs the abilities, memories and feelings of anyone she touches. She took the name Rogue. Mystique, a shapeshifting criminal, then took her in and raised her alongside Destiny.

Rogue's touch means she can't safely hold anyone, so she lives with loneliness and fear of her own power. That tension drives most of her stories. She is tough and sarcastic, with a Southern streak, and she is deeply loyal to the people she lets in. When she fights, she hits with super-strength, speed and flight.

She is a villain when she first appears, but she is conflicted. Her early fight with Ms. Marvel leaves her with powers and memories that don't fully fit her, and that pushes her toward the X-Men. We score her 8 because she keeps choosing to be better than where she started, even though her early deeds still count against her.
