Do we like Rick Sanchez?
A character from Rick and Morty (2013–present)
Our score: 4 out of 10. He's brilliant, hilarious and sometimes loyal to his family. He's also reckless, selfish and a bad influence. We'd cheer him on in a bar but wouldn't want him in charge of our lives.
Rick Sanchez is the title co-protagonist of Adult Swim's animated sci-fi comedy. The show follows the adventures of a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. He moves in with his daughter's family and soon has Morty, his grandson, as his sidekick.
Rick is a drunk, a nihilist and a boundless inventor. He can build a portal gun, a spaceship or a small universe out of junk, and he treats morality as optional. He is funny and quick, and sometimes oddly tender about his family. But he constantly puts Morty in danger and dodges responsibility for the mess he leaves behind. That's why he lands in the middle of our scale: great company, terrible guardian.
Early on, an experiment goes catastrophically wrong. Rick fixes it by moving his family into a nearby universe where that universe's versions of Rick and Morty are already dead. He doesn't seem bothered by it, and it shows how far he'll go to avoid facing consequences.
