Do we like Rey?
A character from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015-2019)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's brave, kind and stubborn, and she keeps choosing to help others, even though she's sometimes reckless and unsure of herself.
Rey grows up alone on the desert planet Jakku. She scavenges old starship wreckage for food and waits for a family that never comes. When a runaway droid, BB-8, and a defecting stormtrooper, Finn, cross her path, she's pulled into a galaxy-wide fight she never asked for.
She's resourceful, a gifted pilot and mechanic, and fiercely loyal. Her flaws are real but human. She is impatient, hungry for answers about where she comes from, and quick to trust her own judgement over advice. She also kindly shields the weak and refuses to leave people behind.
We score her an 8. She does a lot of good and rarely does harm, and her growing pains make her easier to like. The wobble comes from the temptation of power and the mistakes her impatience causes along the way.
Her story turns on her search for identity. Across the three films she learns that her parentage doesn't decide who she is. In the final film she is revealed as Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter. She rejects that legacy and takes the name Skywalker.
