Do we like Reigen Arataka?
A character from Mob Psycho 100 (2016-2022)
Our score: 8 out of 10. A con man with no powers who turns out to be a kind, steady mentor. We'd back him, and we'd probably let him do our taxes too.
Reigen runs Spirits and Such Consultation Office, advertising himself as the century's greatest psychic. In truth he has no supernatural ability at all. He gets by on charm, showmanship and a sharp read on people. His one real asset is Mob, a middle-schooler who is actually one of the strongest psychics around.
He's a smooth talker who exaggerates, upsells and sometimes fibs to keep the business going. He also has a real moral compass. He steers Mob to value his own growth over his powers, and he turns down chances to exploit him. He often steps up to help people when he could easily run.
He scores high because his flaws are petty and his care for others is real. He is the kind of adult a kid with overwhelming power needs: supportive, honest where it counts, and unafraid to tell Mob he's wrong. Some of his best moments come when he's out of his depth and helps anyway.
