Do we like Rei Ayanami?
A character from Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995–1996)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's guarded and strange, but she's loyal and brave, and she harms no one by choice. She's easy to root for.
Rei is the First Child, a teenage pilot of the giant Evangelion Unit-00 for the secretive agency NERV. The series follows young pilots defending the world from monstrous Angels. Rei is quiet, expressionless and isolated, and she is fiercely devoted to her duty and to NERV's commander, Gendo Ikari.
She is the show's emotional mystery. Rei seems to have little sense of self, and the story is partly about her learning what she wants, what she values and what connects her to other people, especially Shinji, the new pilot. Her bluntness and awkwardness can read as cold, but her actions show real care.
We score her 8 because she is brave, selfless and dependable, and she does almost no harm. Points come off because her blind obedience makes her a tool for others' plans, and she is often too passive to push back on them. That leaves her more sympathetic than heroic.
