Do we like Rapunzel?
A character from Tangled (2010)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's brave, kind and endlessly optimistic, and she wins over thugs, guards and a thief without ever turning mean.
Rapunzel is a young woman with magically long golden hair. She has spent her whole life in a secluded tower with Mother Gothel, who she thinks is her mother. Every year on her birthday she watches mysterious floating lights in the sky and longs to see them up close.
When a charming thief called Flynn Rider climbs into her tower while hiding from the guards, she takes her chance. She knocks him out with a frying pan, hides his stolen loot and strikes a deal: he guides her to the lights and brings her home safely. She's a mix of naive and quick-witted. She's torn between guilt about disobeying Gothel and the thrill of freedom, and she keeps being delighted by grass, crowds and music.
Our score is high because her goodness is active, not passive. She's resourceful, loyal and forgiving, and she tends to see the best in people, which usually pays off. Her one real weakness is trust: the person who raised her has not been honest with her, and it takes her a while to see that.
In the end she works out who she really is and what Gothel has taken from her. She refuses to be used any longer, even when it costs her. Flynn cuts her hair to save her, which breaks its magic, and Rapunzel is finally free, reunited with her real parents and the kingdom that missed her.
