Do we like Pinocchio?
A character from The Adventures of Pinocchio (best known through Disney's 1940 film) (1883 / 1940)
Our score: 7 out of 10. Easily led and often foolish, but his heart is good and he learns. We'd back him, and keep a close eye on who he hangs out with.
Pinocchio is a wooden puppet made by the lonely woodcarver Geppetto. A magical spark brings him to life. He is told he can become a real boy if he proves himself brave, truthful and unselfish. In Disney's version, the cricket Jiminy Cricket is appointed to act as his conscience.
His main flaw is that he is gullible. On his way to school he is led astray by smooth-talking crooks and tempting distractions, and each bad choice lands him in a bigger mess. When he lies, his nose famously grows. Collodi's original book is darker and more cautionary than the Disney film.
We give him a 7. He is a child in all but name, so he makes child-sized mistakes, and he is never cruel. He is charming and sincere, and he keeps trying to do right by the people who love him. Few heroes are as easy to forgive.
