Do we like Patrick Star?

A character from SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–present)

Our score: 7 out of 10. He's not bright and he's not always helpful, but he's loyal, cheerful and always shows up for his best friend. We'd back him, as long as someone else does the planning.

Patrick Star is a pink starfish who lives under a rock on Conch Street in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom. He first appeared in the show's pilot in 1999. SpongeBob SquarePants follows the cheerful fry cook SpongeBob, and Patrick is his constant companion on jellyfishing trips, bubble-blowing and misadventures. Patrick has also led his own spin-off, The Patrick Star Show.

Patrick is lazy, naive and famously short on common sense. He's an adult who acts like a big kid, and his advice tends to cause problems. Critics and fans still love him for his childlike innocence and his loyalty to SpongeBob. He sometimes comes across as selfish, and he can be a bad influence or a nuisance to the neighbours, especially Squidward.

We gave him a 7 because his heart is reliably in the right place. When he thinks his friendship with SpongeBob is at risk, he'll go to silly lengths to fix it. He loses points for the times his laziness, vanity or muddled thinking leave SpongeBob worse off. He's a better friend than he is a helper.
