Do we like Pac-Man?
A character from Pac-Man (1980)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes. He's cheerful and persistent, and he's never hurt anyone who wasn't chasing him. We'd follow him through any maze, though he's not much of a talker.
Pac-Man debuted in Namco's 1980 arcade game, created by designer Toru Iwatani and his small team. He was called Puck-Man in Japan, and the name changed for the US release. The popular story says the shape came from a pizza with a slice missing, though Iwatani has said that is only partly true.
In the game he runs around a maze eating dots while four coloured ghosts chase him. Grabbing a power pellet lets him turn the tables for a short time. He has no weapons and no grudges, and he just wants to clear the board.
We score him 8 out of 10. He is harmless, brave in the face of constant pursuit, and charming enough to have become one of gaming's best-known icons. He loses a point or two because he never does anything heroic beyond staying alive and snacking.
