Do we like Oliver May?

A character from Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO (2004–2009)

Our score: 6 out of 10. A decent, earnest engineer in a bad war. We'd back him for his conscience and his craft, but he does serve a side that's hard to cheer for.

Oliver May is a young technical officer in Zeon's 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit. He's a fresh university graduate who has joined just before the One Year War. His job is to test and evaluate new military technology. He works from the Jotunheim, a civilian transport ship that has been converted for military use.

Oliver is a sincere, honest engineer with a lot of respect for machines and the people who build them. He believes technology can build a better future. That outlook sits badly with the battlefield. He has doubts about Zeon's political infighting and about the way test weapons end up being sent into combat. He still tries to do his job well and to look after the crew around him.

We score him a 6 because he's a likeable, principled person. He's more of a witness than a hero, though. He's a small cog in a big war, on a side that started it, and his doubts don't often turn into action. He's easy to root for as a person, but he's no champion.
