Do we like Olaf?
A character from Frozen (2013)
Our score: 10 out of 10. Yes, easily. He's loyal, kind and endlessly optimistic, he offers a warm hug to everyone he meets, and he never gives up on his friends.
Olaf is a talking snowman. Elsa and Anna made him when they were little girls, and years later Elsa's snow magic brings him to life. He is innocent, curious and full of wonder, with a goofy dream of sunny beaches and warm hugs that overlooks the fact that heat is bad news for snowmen. Frozen follows Anna as she sets out to bring her sister Elsa home and end an endless winter, and Olaf becomes one of her travelling companions.
Olaf mostly provides comic relief, but he is more than that. He greets strangers as friends and sees the good in people. His naivety makes him funny, and it also gives the story some of its heart. He stays loyal to Anna when sticking with her is risky, and his friendliness softens even the grumpier members of the group.
Late in the first film Olaf makes a brave, selfless choice to help Anna even though it puts him in real danger. That moment shows how far his loyalty goes. In the sequel he grows into a gentle thinker who is trying to make sense of change, growing up and loss, and he stays warm and hopeful through it all.
He gets a 10 because he does no harm, he gives a lot of comfort and encouragement, and he is loyal to the end. We'd back him every time.
