Do we like Niko Bellic?
A character from Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
Our score: 4 out of 10. A weary, darkly funny man who wants peace and keeps choosing violence. We'd back his loyalty and conscience, but not his body count.
Niko Bellic arrives in Liberty City on a freighter. His cousin Roman has written to him about a glamorous American life of mansions and money. The reality is a cramped flat, a struggling taxi business and debts to dangerous people. Niko is also running from his own past as a soldier in a Balkan war.
To protect Roman and earn a living, Niko drifts into crime. He takes jobs for loan sharks, mobsters and crooked officials. He is a cynical narrator who is witty and dry, and he is plainly tired of the violence he is good at. He keeps saying he wants to leave that life behind.
That is why he scores a middling 5. His loyalty, his sense of right and wrong and his moments of mercy are real. But the game has him do a lot of killing for money and revenge. You would trust him with your family, but you would not want him as your flatmate.
