Do we like Nico Robin?
A character from One Piece (1997–present)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's a loyal, clever crewmate who started out on the wrong side. Her dry humor and her devotion to the truth make her a keeper.
Robin is introduced as Miss All Sunday, the mysterious right hand of the crime lord Crocodile and his secret organization, Baroque Works. She's calm, elegant and unreadable, and at first she's very much an antagonist to Luffy and his crew. Her backstory is a hard one. She is a scholar from the island of Ohara, and she was hunted by the world government from childhood for the dangerous knowledge she can read.
Her personality is what makes her work so well in the crew. She's dry, composed and fond of dark jokes, and she's unflappable when her friends are panicking. She's also fiercely curious. She wants to find the true history of the world, and that takes courage, because most of the world's powers want it hidden. She gets warmer and more playful the longer she spends among people who accept her.
Robin earns her 8 through loyalty and heart. She's one of the most capable members of the crew, and her Devil Fruit powers are inventive and useful in a fight. What keeps her from a 9 or 10 is her morally murky past, and her habit of keeping people at arm's length and assuming she has to face things alone.
After joining the crew at the end of the Alabasta arc, she eventually leaves them in secret, believing that's the only way to keep them safe. Luffy and the crew take on the entire world government to bring her back. Her cry that she wants to live is one of the series' defining moments, and it marks the point where she fully trusts her friends.
