Do we like Nausicaä?
A character from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
Our score: 10 out of 10. Yes, absolutely. She meets fear and violence with curiosity and compassion, and she'll risk herself for people, and even for giant insects.
Nausicaä is the young princess of the Valley of the Wind. It is a small, peaceful kingdom in a far-future Earth where a toxic jungle, home to giant insects, is spreading. She is a gifted glider pilot and a curious scientist, and her people love her.
While others fear the jungle and its creatures, especially the huge armored Ohmu, she studies them and tries to understand them. That curiosity drives her. Her rival, Princess Kushana, leads an invading army with a very different view of the world.
She scores a 10 because her courage never turns into cruelty. She stays kind even to enemies, and she tries to stop conflicts rather than win them. She is determined and sometimes headstrong, but her flaws are small beside her empathy.
