Do we like Nami?

A character from One Piece (1997–present)

Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's greedy and sneaky, but she's brave when it counts, and the crew would be lost without her.

Nami is the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates, the crew led by the endlessly optimistic Monkey D. Luffy. She's a gifted cartographer and a sharp-eyed thief who reads the sea and the weather better than anyone. Her dream is to draw a complete map of the world. At the start of the story she's a lone operator who robs pirates and trusts nobody.

She's clever and practical, and she has a famous love of money and a short fuse. Under the cons and the scolding she's loyal. She often acts as the crew's sensible one, keeping the reckless Luffy pointed in a safe direction. She also admits to being scared of plenty of things, but she still shows up when her friends need her.

Her backstory explains the thieving. Her adoptive mother, Bellemere, was killed by the pirate Arlong, who then took over her village. Nami then spent years working for him and stealing from other pirates, trying to buy her home's freedom. Luffy and his crew help break her free of that deal, and she joins them for good.

We score her an 8. Her greed and trickery cost her a couple of points. She earns the rest by being brave and loyal, and by being the one the crew rely on to get through storms.
