Do we like My Melody?

A character from My Melody (Sanrio) / Onegai My Melody (1975–present)

Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's kind, honest and loyal, and she wants to bake cookies and look after her friends. Her only flaw is a very sweet naivety.

My Melody is a white rabbit who wears a pink hood. Sanrio launched her in 1975 as part of a Christmas promotion, and she was reportedly first imagined as a rabbit take on Little Red Riding Hood. Sanrio says she comes from the forest of Mariland. She is known for being sweet, honest and kind, and she loves making cookies with her mum.

She has appeared on merchandise, in books and in anime, most notably the 2005 series Onegai My Melody, where she often ends her sentences with 'onegai' (please). Her friends include Flat the mouse and Piano. A more recent stop-motion Netflix series, My Melody & Kuromi, marked the 50th anniversary.

Her best-known foil is Kuromi, who began as a mischievous rival in the 2005 anime and became a popular character in her own right. Kuromi stirs up trouble, but My Melody usually answers with patience and good humour rather than revenge. That is a big part of why we score her so high: she is a gentle, dependable friend who stays kind when it's tested.
