Do we like Mowgli?
A character from The Jungle Book (1894)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's brave, loyal and quick to learn, and he mostly uses his cleverness to protect his friends. He can be proud and hot-tempered.
Mowgli is a human cub who wanders into the Indian jungle as a toddler. A wolf pack adopts him. Baloo the bear teaches him the Law of the Jungle, and Bagheera the black panther watches over him. Kipling's stories follow his childhood among the animals.
He is bold, curious and clever. He learns the jungle's rules and the languages of its creatures. His human tools, such as fire and cunning, make him stand out. He is loyal to those who raised him, but he can be proud and hot-tempered.
He scores high because his choices are mostly kind and brave. He defends his family and friends, and he faces real danger to do it. His flaws are very human ones, such as stubbornness, pride and a short fuse, and he grows out of some of them as the stories go on.
