Do we like Mother Gothel?
A character from Tangled (2010)
Our score: 1 out of 10. No. She poses as a doting mother, but she isolates, belittles and manipulates a young woman for her own gain. Great song, terrible guardian.
Tangled is Disney's take on Rapunzel. A girl with very long, magical golden hair lives in a tower, sure that her mother, Gothel, is protecting her from a dangerous world. Gothel is charming, theatrical and always ready with a hug and a joke.
Her love is conditional. She keeps Rapunzel small with constant digs ('Mother knows best') and plays on her fears of the outside world. The song of that name is one of Disney's best villain numbers, and it works because the manipulation sounds so cozy.
She scores a 1 because her cruelty is quiet and personal. She isn't a conqueror. She is a controlling guardian who wrecks a young person's confidence and freedom for her own benefit. Nothing she does for Rapunzel is done for Rapunzel's sake, so we would not back her.
