Do we like Monkey D. Luffy?
A character from One Piece (1997–present)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's loyal, fearless and endlessly cheerful, and he treats his crew like family. Just keep him away from the snacks and the paperwork.
Luffy is a boy from a small East Blue village who dreams of finding the One Piece, the treasure left behind by the late King of the Pirates. As a child he accidentally eats a Devil Fruit, which turns his body into stretchy rubber. At 17 he sets sail with a straw hat given to him by a pirate he admires. He recruits a crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, and heads for the dangerous Grand Line.
He is stubborn, optimistic and easily distracted by food, and he often looks like an idiot. But he reads people very well, and his simple goal of freedom and adventure draws in swordsmen, thieves, cooks, scholars and more. He gives his crew room to follow their own dreams and gets angry when anyone hurts them. Netflix's own cast guide describes him as a larger-than-life, eternally optimistic leader who is "stubborn to a fault".
He gets a 9 because the good he does far outweighs the chaos. He tears down corrupt rulers, shrugs off rewards, and treats enemies and strangers with surprising fairness. He loses a point for his recklessness, his disregard for law, and the collateral damage that follows him everywhere. He's the captain you'd happily follow into a storm.
