Do we like Miss Trunchbull?
A character from Matilda (1988)
Our score: 0 out of 10. No. She bullies and punishes small children for fun, so we wouldn't back her. She makes even the worst grown-ups in the story look mild.
Miss Agatha Trunchbull is the headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. She is huge, loud and strong, and she was once a champion hammer thrower. She believes children are pests who should be crushed. Her rules are strict and her punishments are inventive and cruel.
Matilda Wormwood is a small, brilliant girl with neglectful parents. She arrives at the school and sees at once what the Trunchbull is like. The kind teacher Miss Honey is the one person who stands up to the headmistress, in her own quiet way.
She scores 0 because her cruelty is constant and deliberate, and she is not redeemed by any kindness. She is fun to read about, in the way a very good villain is. As a person you would want to be far from her.
