Do we like Misa Amane?

A character from Death Note (2006–2007)

Our score: 3 out of 10. Loyal, loving and fearless, but she kills on request and would burn down the world for one man. We'd enjoy her company and still not back her.

Misa Amane is a popular model, actress and singer in Japan. In Death Note, a brilliant student finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it, and a vigilante called Kira starts killing criminals worldwide. Misa idolises Kira. She gets her own Death Note from a death god, Rem, and travels to Japan to find him.

Misa is bubbly, dramatic and openly affectionate, and she's cheerfully fixated on the man she loves. She also gets a Shinigami's eyes, which let her see people's names and lifespans. That makes her a dangerous partner for Kira, and a hazard to the investigators trying to catch him. Her moral compass is simple: whoever Kira wants gone is gone, and whoever threatens him is a target.

Her score is low because her devotion is real but ruinous. She has a sad backstory and a big heart, and she's one of the few characters who is honest about her feelings. But she kills with little hesitation, including people who were only doing their jobs. We like her, but we wouldn't back her.
