Mirabel is a teenager in the Madrigal family. They live in a magical house in the mountains of Colombia, and each child is given a special gift on reaching a certain age. Mirabel is the only one who didn't get one. She is cheerful and quick with a joke, but she quietly feels like an outsider.

When she notices the family's magic starting to fade, she sets out to find the cause. Nobody else seems willing to listen. Her search takes her into the family's secrets and her relatives' private worries.

We score her high because she keeps showing up for people even when they dismiss her. She is also stubborn and sometimes blunt, and she can push in where she isn't wanted. Those flaws make her feel real, and her empathy is what drives the story.
