Do we like Minnie Mouse?
A character from Steamboat Willie (1928)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. She's kind, loyal and quick with a cheerful 'Yoo-hoo!', and she has never done anyone real harm. She loses a point because she's often written as the one who needs rescuing.
Minnie first appeared in the 1928 short Steamboat Willie. She runs to catch a steamboat that Mickey is working on, and she is its only passenger. She was written as Mickey's love interest, and her look was inspired by the flapper girls of the 1920s. She is also credited with the first spoken 'Yoo-hoo!' in the series.
She has appeared in dozens of shorts with Mickey and Pluto, but she has never had her own series or starred in her own theatrical release. Her voice has changed hands many times over the years. Walt Disney did it at first, then Marcellite Garner, who helped define her personality, then Russi Taylor for decades, and now Kaitlyn Robrock.
Her personality has stayed fairly steady. She's sweet, tidy, musical and fashionable, and she's loyal to Mickey. She can also be spirited, sometimes teasing him and sometimes telling him off when he deserves it.
We scored her 8 out of 10. She is as dependable as a friend gets and does no harm. She loses points because older cartoons often cast her as the damsel, so she never gets the big adventures Mickey does.
