Do we like Merida?
A character from Brave (2012)
Our score: 7 out of 10. Brave, loyal and a joy to follow, but her stubborn streak causes the mess. We'd back her, then make her apologise first.
Merida is the daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor in a legendary Scottish kingdom. She loves archery, riding and freedom, and she has no wish to be a polished princess. When tradition says she must be betrothed to the son of one of the allied clans, she rebels.
Her fight with her mother is the heart of the film. Both women are stubborn and neither really listens. Merida is easy to root for because she wants to choose her own path. She is also young and headstrong, and she acts before she thinks.
Hoping to change her mother's mind, Merida gets a spell from a witch. It goes badly wrong and turns Queen Elinor into a bear. Merida then has to put things right, and that makes her grow. She learns to listen, to apologise and to take responsibility. Her courage and love for her family make her an ally we'd gladly back, even if she's the one who caused the trouble.
