Do we like Master Chief?
A character from Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes, we'd back him. He's a quiet, loyal soldier who keeps getting handed the impossible job and does it, usually while looking after the people around him.
In the 26th century, humanity is losing a war against the Covenant, an alliance of alien zealots. Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 is a Spartan-II, a super-soldier who was recruited as a child, trained hard and given heavy augmentations. He is calm, disciplined and a man of few words. In the first game, he wakes up from cryosleep when his ship is under attack, and his mission turns into something much bigger than he expected.
His personality is much of the appeal. He doesn't boast or monologue, and he lets his actions do the talking. He has a dry sense of humor and a firm sense of duty. His bond with Cortana, the AI who rides in his armor, gives him a warmer, more human side. The franchise keeps returning to the question of what the war and the program have cost him.
He scores well because his main motive is protecting others. He backs up the marines and allies he fights beside, and he keeps going when everyone else would stop. Some of the Spartan program's methods are morally murky, but those were done to him, not by him. The TV series gives him a more conflicted version of the character, but the games' version is the one we're judging.
