Do we like Lotso?
A character from Toy Story 3 (2010)
Our score: 2 out of 10. Warm hugs and a Southern drawl hide a bully who rules by fear. His pain is real, but what he does about it isn't okay, so we wouldn't back him.
Lotso is the cuddly face of Sunnyside Daycare, where Andy's toys end up when they're nearly donated. He greets them with warmth, a drawl and a hug, and promises a home where toys are played with every day.
His backstory is sad. He was once a little girl's beloved toy, then was left behind and replaced. That explains why he turned bitter and no longer trusts anyone's love, and the film asks us to understand him.
Understanding him isn't the same as backing him. He uses that hurt as an excuse to keep other toys down and to protect his own power. He is one of Pixar's most chilling villains because he's so friendly on the surface. Our score is a 2: he is sympathetic but cruel.
