Do we like Lex Luthor?
A character from Action Comics (Superman) (1940–present)
Our score: 1 out of 10. Dazzlingly clever, but he's driven by ego and envy. He would sooner crush a hero than help the city he claims to love, so we wouldn't back him.
Lex Luthor first appeared in Action Comics #23 in 1940, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. He is a genius inventor and the head of LexCorp in Metropolis. He is respected in public and ruthless in private.
His defining trait is his certainty that Superman is a threat to humanity. He cannot stand that an alien is adored as the world's champion, when he believes human brilliance deserves that place. That grudge turns into schemes, traps and corporate manipulation across many eras of the comics.
He scores low because his intellect is real and his charm is useful, but he uses both selfishly. He also tends to lead other villains, as in the Legion of Doom. Some versions have him rise to high office, and he rarely does good without an angle.
