Do we like Lelouch vi Britannia?

A character from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006–2008)

Our score: 6 out of 10. A genius who really wants a kinder world for his sister, but he'll lie, manipulate and mind-control his way there. We'd back his goal more than his methods.

Lelouch is a teenage prince of the Holy Britannian Empire. He was cast aside by his ruthless father and now lives under a false name at a school in conquered Japan, which Britannia renamed Area 11. He's a chess-playing prodigy who is bored, sharp-tongued and endlessly scheming. His one soft spot is his younger sister Nunnally, and he wants to build a world gentle enough for her to live in.

A chance encounter gives him a mysterious power, the Geass, which lets him force people to obey his commands. He takes on the identity of Zero, a masked figure who leads a resistance movement against Britannia. The show is a tense war of wits in which Lelouch outthinks much larger armies with clever plans and theatrical flair.

Why a 6? Lelouch is charming, devoted and often right about how rotten the empire is. But he also lies to the people who trust him, overrides other people's free will, and will sacrifice others for his plan. He's easy to root for, but hard to defend. We'd follow him into a fight, while keeping a careful eye on how he gets there.
