Do we like Kurapika?

A character from Hunter x Hunter (1998–present)

Our score: 7 out of 10. Loyal, brilliant and principled with his friends, but his need for revenge can take him to dark places. We'd back him, and we'd also keep an eye on him.

Kurapika is one of the four leads of Hunter x Hunter, a story about people competing to become licensed Hunters. He is the last of the Kurta clan, a secluded people whose eyes glow scarlet when they feel strong emotion. A gang of thieves called the Phantom Troupe wiped out the clan for those eyes, and Kurapika joined the Hunter Exam to track them down.

He is calm, polite and very clever, and he is often the strategist of his group. His friendships with Gon, Killua and Leorio show a warm, loyal side. The mention of his clan or the Troupe changes him at once: his eyes burn red and he becomes cold and sometimes cruel. That tension is why he scores well but not perfectly. He is admirable and sympathetic, but his single-minded vengeance makes him hard to fully back.

In the Yorknew City arc his hunt for the Troupe takes over the story. He takes a dangerous job in the mafia and binds himself with deadly Nen vows that make him stronger against the Troupe but threaten his own life. His grief costs him some of the caution and warmth that make him likeable. His friends are the ones who pull him back, and that is why we are still on his side.
