Do we like Joy?
A character from Inside Out (2015)
Our score: 8 out of 10. Yes, we'd back her. Her warmth and drive are infectious, and her flaws come from caring too much, not from malice.
Joy is one of five emotions living in Headquarters, the control room of Riley's mind. She was the first to appear when Riley was born, and she sees it as her job to make sure every day is a good one. Riley's family moves to a new city, and everything gets complicated.
Joy is energetic, kind, and endlessly optimistic, and she's a natural leader. Her big flaw is that she can't see why Sadness matters, so she tries to keep her away from the controls. It comes from love, but it's controlling, and it drives much of the story's conflict.
We score her an 8. Her heart is always in the right place, she never gives up on Riley, and she grows as a character. She loses a few points for being bossy and for dismissing a teammate's value for so long.
