Do we like John Crichton?
A character from Farscape (1999–2003)
Our score: 9 out of 10. Yes. He's a loyal, funny, stubborn problem-solver who keeps choosing decency in a galaxy that doesn't. He's sometimes reckless, but he's a friend you'd want on your crew.
John Crichton is an IASA astronaut and theoretical scientist who is testing an experimental spacecraft when a wormhole opens and throws him to a far-off corner of the universe. He is the only human around. He is picked up amid a chase involving the living ship Moya and her escaped-prisoner crew, with the Peacekeepers hunting them. In the early going, he accidentally causes a Peacekeeper pilot's death, which shapes his first days out there.
His appeal is that he's out of his depth, but he never turns cynical. He cracks jokes, quotes Earth pop culture, and gets by on bluster, cleverness and stubbornness. He pushes for compassion even among aliens who think he's naive. The crew of Moya become his family, and he often puts himself in danger for them.
Why a 9 and not a 10: he's impulsive, he often makes things worse before he makes them better, and the strain of life on the run wears on him. Still, he's loyal, brave and kind where it counts, and the show is built around the fact that we want to back him.
