Do we like Jacob Black?

A character from Twilight (2005-2020)

Our score: 6 out of 10. Loyal, warm and brave, and we'd back him on a rescue. We'd also tell him to stop pushing when Bella says no.

Jacob Black lives on the Quileute reservation at La Push, near Forks, Washington. He's easygoing and funny, and he's known Bella Swan since they were kids because their fathers are old friends. When Bella moves back to town, he's one of the first people to make her feel at home. He's happiest working on cars and motorbikes.

As the story goes on, Jacob is drawn into his tribe's old legends and a long-standing feud with the Cullen family, and he has to decide where his loyalties lie. He is fiercely loyal, quick to anger and openly romantic, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. That makes him easy to like, and sometimes frustrating.

We scored him a 6 because his good qualities are real: courage, humour, steady friendship and a strong sense of duty to his pack and family. He loses points for his possessive streak. He keeps pressing Bella after she has made her feelings clear, and he sometimes guilt-trips her. He is a good friend and protector, but a poor example of how to handle rejection.
